I IV V Chord Pattern
In almost every song I've ever written I've used the I IV V chord pattern. It's a very old school way of doing it but I use it mainly because one of my songwriting rules is to never overcomplicate the music. In case you don't understand how it works I'll try to explain it. The I chord is the route chord of the key that it's in, the IV chord is four whole steps up from the I chord, and the V chord is one whole step up from the VI chord and five up from the I chord. There is also some additional chords which can be used in the same progession, these are displayed in the chart below.
