A Letter from the War

During my first year at uni, we were asked to choose a task to complete over a period of several months, there were a few options, but naturally I chose to write a song. This song was inspired by other songs I had heard about wars, in particular, soldiers longing for home.

Verse I
Dear mother I've been in the war for seven months today
Seven months I've been here, since I came in the month of May.
My friend was in a battle, he lost so tired and brave
They laid him down in a forgien town
In a lonely nameless grave.

Chorus
I'll soon return to you
Not long away at home
I'll soon return to you
To you and dad at home.

Verse II
The sun on the loch is shining, there's barbed wire and guns firing still
The war still lingers on past the beauty of the hills.
The soldiers fighting with me are brave and tired as me
I have such fear while I am here over these bloody seas.

Chorus

Verse III
The days are getting longer, the bugle's sounding well
The rugged grounds and mountains and fields in which I dwell
Each day just makes me wonder if my home I'll ever see
If I don't and God tells me I won't
My last thoughts of you will be.

Chorus
